Polar alignment means pointing your equatorial mount’s right ascension axis directly at the celestial pole (Polaris in the Northern Hemisphere). This alignment allows your mount to track stars by rotating on a single axis.
To polar align:
- Level your tripod.
- Set the mount’s latitude angle to your location.
- Use the built-in polar scope to center Polaris within the reticle.
- Fine-tune alignment by observing a bright star and adjusting as needed.
Many modern mounts offer software-assisted alignment to simplify this process, making it easier than ever to get precise tracking for astrophotography.
