The first two workshops were dedicated to the discussion of elementary processes governing the reaction rates at surfaces and in bulk materials, i. e. adsorption, desorption and diffusion. In this third year a step towards the understanding of complicated (but practical) issues such as adhesion and friction between different materials was undertaken. The presentations and discussions focused on elementary chemical and physical processes at surfaces and interfaces relevant to adhesion, lubrication and friction and gave an account of the application of surface science methods and techniques to relevant model systems. Clearly, at the time of the conference and the publication of the proceedings the understanding of the chemical and physical mechanisms determining the interaction between two solids is still rudimentary, but the issues involved are attracting the attention of more and more scientists and are now regularly represented at scientific meetings. The conference was held at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The facilities provided an ideal setting for the meeting and lively discussions. The invitations to participants suggested that the written papers concern Fast Adiabatic Phase Changes in Fluids and Related Phenomena. Particular topics suggested were: Liquefaction shockwaves and Shock splitting; Evaporation waves; Condensation in Laval nozzles and turbines; Stability in multiphase shocks; Non-equilibrium and near-critical phenomena; Nucleation in dynamic systems; Structure of transition layers; Acoustic phenomena in two phase systems and Cavitation waves. All of these topics should have been treated with emphasis on physical results, new phenomena and theoretical models. Participants from fourteen nations took part in the Symposium and presented papers which were within the range of suggested topics. The organization and execution of the Symposium was performed by the Max-Planck-Institut fUr Str5mungsforschung in G5ttingen. In particular, the meeting has been promoted under the leadership of Professor Dr. E.-A. MUller, who has for many years given his support for international exchanges in science. Gupta is a physics book focused on Dynamics. Best for students, educators, and scientifically curious readers.

In any rotating machinery system, the bearing has traditionally been a crit ical member of the entire system, since it is the component that permits the relative motion between the stationary and moving parts. Depending on the application, a number of different bearing types have been used, such as oil-lubricated hydrodynamic bearings, gas bearings, magnetic suspensions, rolling element bearings, etc. Hydrodynamic bearings can provide any desired load support, but they are limited in stiffness and the associated power loss may be quite large. Gas bearings are used for high-precision applications where the supported loads are relatively light, bearing power losses are very low, and the rotating speeds generally high. For super precision components where no frictional dissipation or bearing power loss can be tolerated, magnetic suspensions are employed; again, the load support requirements are very low. Rolling element bearings have been widely used for those applications that require greater bearing versatility, due to the requirements for high-load and high-stiffness characteristics, while allowing moderate power loss and permitting variable speeds. A study of the dynamic interaction of rolling elements is, therefore, the subject of this text. Texts covering the analysis and design methodology of rolling elements are very limited. Notable works include Analysis of Stresses and Deflections (Jones, 1946, Vols. I and II), Ball and Roller Bearings, Their Theory, Design and Application (Eschmann, Hasbargen, and Weigand, 1958), Ball and Roller Bearing Engineering (Palmgren, 1959, 3rd ed. ), Advanced Bearing Technology (Bisson and Anderson, 1965), and Rolling Bearing Analysis (Harris, 1966).

"Advanced Materials and Structures for Extreme Operating Conditions" by Jacek Skrzypek, Artur W. A. on June 13th to 15th, 1989. The first two conferences in this series were held in Tokyo. The third was held in Versailles, France in October 1987. The International Conference on Advanced Robotics is affiliated with the International Federation of Robotics. This conference was sponsored by The Ohio State University. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers was a cooperating co-sponsor. The objective of the International Conference on Advanced Robotics is to provide an international exchange of information on the topic of advanced robotics. This was adopted as one of the themes for international research cooperation at a meeting of representatives of seven industrialized countries held in Williamsburg, U. S. A. in May 1983. The present conference is truly international in character with contributions from authors of twelve countries. (Bulgaria, Canada, France, Great Britain, India, Italy, Japan, Peoples Republic of China, Poland, Republic of China, Spain, United States of America.) The subject matter of the papers is equally diverse, covering most technical areas of robotics. The authors are distinguished. They are leaders in the field in their respective countries. The International Conference on Advanced Robotics has always particularly encouraged papers oriented to the design of robotic systems, or to research directed at advanced applications in service robotics, construction, nuclear power, agriculture, mining, underwater systems, and space systems.

"Advanced Solid Mechanics" by Farzad Hejazi, Kar Chun Tan is a physics book focused on Dynamics. Of particular interest was the application of such methods to structural problems in the blossoming field of micromechanical devices. In this context it was becoming evident that we needed to learn to navigate through the continuum/discrete interface. Such were the circumstances when Vladimir Granik came to visit us at Berkeley for the first time. It is probably not surprising that we received with great enthusiasm his offer to join forces and develop a mechanics .of solid structures that would be based on a discrete representation of matter. Vladimir had established the foundations for such an endeavor with his work at Moscow University in the late 1970s. Since that first meeting, and with ever-increasing enthusiasm, it has been a great privilege for me to collaborate with Vladimir. We first applied the formalism of what has become known as "doublet mechanics" to the microstructure-based theory of failure of solids and worked on the paral lels and differences between the doublet approach and homogenization, to gether with Kevin Mon and Derek Hansford. Plane elastodynamics followed after Francesco Maddalena had proposed doublet viscoelesticity. The book also brings together experimentalists and theoreticians to highlight the multidimensional aspects of spectroscopy and discuss the latest issues. Accordingly, it provides insights not only into the general goals of spectroscopy, but also into how the various spectroscopic techniques represent a toolbox that can be used to gain a more detailed understanding of molecular systems and complex chemical problems. Besides technical aspects, basic theoretical interpretations of spectroscopic results are also presented. The spectroscopy techniques discussed include UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, IR absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and time-resolved spectroscopy. In turn, basic tools like lasers and theoretical modeling approaches are also presented. Lastly, applications for the characterization of fundamental properties of molecules (environmental aspects, biomolecules, pharmaceutical drugs, hazardous molecules, etc.) and materials (nanomaterials, nuclear chemistry materials, biomaterials, etc.) are discussed.
